The Deep Freeze winter festival made for a fun artwork to paint, and having lived near Alberta Avenue I was proud to be the artist. Apart from the ice sculptures, slide, and gate, we see children tobogganing and enjoying a game of curling with cans and brooms.
It was a unique challenge as a mural artist to paint the colourful effects of light shining upwards in a winter night, like this ice sculptor working on a giant squirrel statue. Most of the statues and people were from photographs of previous festivals.
Children toboggan down a hill in the background of this colourful night time winter festival mural, while artists sculpt their ice statues with a chain saw and heat gun. On the left side Conan the Barbarian characters Subotai and Rexor warm themselves at a fire.
Refracted pink light shines upward from an ice sculpture of a horse onto curious children inspecting it. The colourful lighting with ice at night acted like a prism, and made for a magical atmosphere and mood in the painting.
A little girl in a bright blue and red snow suit flies down an ice slide on a crazy carpet, with a huge smile on her cartoon painted face. It can be great fun capturing children's big expressions and colourful wardrobes.
