Team Martin: Curling Mural

Team Martin was a mural project painted for the Giants of Edmonton, a collaboration with the City of Edmonton, Ched Radio, property owners and the public, where inspirational Edmonton residents are commemorated in a mural. When this mural was painted, Kevin Martin's team had recently won the gold medal in men's curling at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, going undefeated as the first team since 1924 to do so.

Team Martin is a unique as a two in one mural where separate paintings on different walls join up at the corner for a ninety degree view. The first artwork is an action scene of Kevin Martin throwing the winning rock at the 2010 Winter Olympics with the entire team, and the adjoining mural shows the team with coach Jules Owchar receiving their Olympic gold medals.

With this mural I wanted an artwork that promotes the sport of curling as Kevin Martin, John Morris, Marc Kennedy, and Ben Herbert do with their passion, talent, and sportsmanship for curling. Teamwork and sportsmanship are encouraged in the painting as Martin is visibly surrounded in action by Herbert and Kennedy, while being the centre of attention through composition, colour, and lighting. John Morris is shown in the right foreground so that all team members are captured at one time.
