BC Seascape Paitings

British Columbia is known for its spectacular forests, mountains and coastlines yet most of its untouched remaining wilderness is in the ocean, under the sea. As soon as your head is in the water life can be seen everywhere you look, from microscopic algae to the world’s largest octopus to humpback whales. The underwater wilderness of BC coasts is my favourite place on earth.

To bring this ocean web of life to an artwork requires bringing selective scenery to the viewer that focuses more on our imagination than an expansive viewpoint. Where on land we see far distances, the ocean absorbs light and tiny organisms like plankton cloud vision. We use cognitive perception to fill in the blanks of what is out of sight to us in the ocean: we imagine. Sometimes I enjoy bridging the worlds above water and underwater with a split screen painting, letting us see for miles on the surface while firing our ocean imaginations below.
